Wow. I too read Nesterenko’s thoughts in Working- many years ago- and was very moved by his descriptions and reflections. I don’t remember the whole thing, but there’s a passage in there, a very lyrical one in which he recalls being outside in the dead of a Manitoba winter at dusk. He talks about the stark beauty.
I’m going to get hold of the book again to re-read that.

The whole book is interesting and a good deal of it is moving. You at once struck by the pride and meaning people find jin obs we tend to think of as dull, and by the frustration and the tedium so many people endure.

Hang in there! I miss my family too. It’s hard. I’m in California – they’re not.

I had noooooo idea Tori Amos had released an Xmas album. I’ll have to check it out. I bought Sarah MacLachlan’s Xmas CD but haven’t listened to it much yet.

I fly by airplane usually twice a year or so, and I hate it as well. It’s too stressful. I’d much rather drive and enjoy the open road. If time weren’t usually a factor, I’d definitely go the driving route.

I love TJs and just went there today. Here’s what I got:

7 bags of plain pita chips
2 containers of pink lemonade
1 container of mango lemonade

And I really wanted to get 2398789 things of their frozen chicken tikka masala (I have lived on this stuff for the past few months), but they didn’t have any. Boo.
